Ocean‐Sea Ice Processes and Their Role in Multi‐Month Predictability of Antarctic Sea Ice

چکیده

Antarctic sea ice is a critical component of the climate system and vital habitat for Southern Ocean ecosystems. Understanding underlying physical processes improving prediction broad interest. Using model data, we investigate upper ocean predictability at interannual timescales in Weddell Sea region. We find that oceanic largely confined to Winter Water layer responds seasonal modifications water column, mainly driven by processes. Predictability depends not only on depth layer, but also how strongly stratified its base is. lost when warm Circumpolar Deep with no ice-related memory entrains into mixed layer. show strong dependence local vertical structure, which suggests both are likely change warming climate.

Antarctic Sea Ice: Physical Processes, Interactions and Variability

As sea ice formation plays a key role in driving Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) production through brine rejection and the associated production of High Salinity freezing point Shelf Water 0tSSW), a possible link between interannual variability of the ice cover and changes in AABW production is expected. Analysis of satellite data indicates that the summer minimum extents (and area) in the Wedde...

Snow on Antarctic Sea Ice

Snow on Antarctic sea ice plays a complex and highly variable role in air-sea-ice interaction processes and the Earth’s climate system. Using data collected mostly during the past 10 years, this paper reviews the following topics: snow thickness and snow type and their geographical and seasonal variations; snow grain size, density, and salinity; frequency of occurrence of slush; thermal conduct...

Important role for ocean warming and increased ice-shelf melt in Antarctic sea-ice expansion

Changes in sea ice significantly modulate climate change because of its high reflective and strong insulating nature. In contrast to Arctic sea ice, sea ice surrounding Antarctica has expanded1, with record extent2 in 2010. This ice expansion has previously been attributed to dynamical atmospheric changes that induce atmospheric cooling3. Here we show that accelerated basal melting of Antarctic...

Proteorhodopsin-bearing bacteria in Antarctic sea ice.

Proteorhodopsins (PRs) are widespread bacterial integral membrane proteins that function as light-driven proton pumps. Antarctic sea ice supports a complex community of autotrophic algae, heterotrophic bacteria, viruses, and protists that are an important food source for higher trophic levels in ice-covered regions of the Southern Ocean. Here, we present the first report of PR-bearing bacteria,...

Broad-scale predictability of carbohydrates and exopolymers in Antarctic and Arctic sea ice.

Sea ice can contain high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), much of which is carbohydrate-rich extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by microalgae and bacteria inhabiting the ice. Here we report the concentrations of dissolved carbohydrates (dCHO) and dissolved EPS (dEPS) in relation to algal standing stock [estimated by chlorophyll (Chl) a concentrations] in sea ice ...
